Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) – Sheep & Goat Development Programme
Programme Overview
The Uttarakhand Sheep and Wool Development Board (USWDB), established in 2000, plays a vital role in improving livestock breeding, productivity, and the livelihoods of rural farming communities. According to the 2019 Livestock Census, Uttarakhand is home to approximately 2.85 lakh sheep and 13.72 lakh goats, making small ruminant farming an important source of income for rural households.
Sheep and goat farming contributes significantly to poverty alleviation, with nearly 94% of goats and 85% of sheep owned by economically weaker rural families. Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) have emerged as an effective platform for organizing livestock farmers, reducing production costs, improving access to quality inputs, and strengthening market linkages through collective action.
GKVS Initiative under USWDB
Since June 2023, Gramin Kisan Vikas Society (GKVS), under the guidance of the Uttarakhand Sheep and Wool Development Board (USWDB), has been actively implementing the Farmer Producer Organization (FPO) Programme across Uttarakhand.
The programme focuses on promoting sustainable agriculture, strengthening farmer institutions, and facilitating Organic Farming Certification through technical support, awareness campaigns, and capacity-building initiatives.
Programme Highlights
• Formation of 10 Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) across Uttarakhand.
• Implementation of the programme in six rural development blocks.
• Promotion of Organic Farming and Organic Certification among member farmers.
• Capacity building through technical training, awareness programmes, and field demonstrations.
• Improved access to quality agricultural inputs, livestock management practices, and advisory services.
• Strengthening market linkages and collective bargaining for better price realization.
